What is A Custom Broker

All goods imported into the United States of America, ( note* this can also apply to any other country) are subject to the laws of the importing country. As an importer who buys goods from another country, where the final destination in this case is the United States of America, you will have to meet certain criteria before your shipment of goods are allowed to enter the country...

In order to enable the smooth transition of your shipment into the US, Custom Brokers are used. In this case it would be a US Customs Broker. Customs brokers can be individuals or companies...and are required by law to be licensed. You can obtain more information from the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America.

Custom brokers will prepare and present to the authorities all the relevant documentation required by law such as Commercial Invoices, Bills of Lading, Certificate of Origin, and any other documents that are required. ..

Brokers will have expertise in all the required procedures such as classification and valuation of the goods , rate of duty to be paid etc...

Prior to importation, it is wise to contact a Custom Broker, giving them all the details about your intended importation of goods so that they can advise you on all the necessary documents you must obtain from your supplier.. this will make life so much easier for you, as when your goods finally arrive in the USA,there will be no surprises..

Custom Brokers of course charge a fee for their services. but it is well worth it! It’s part of the cost of doing business...
